On the Brink of a Breakthrough
1 Kings 19:4 But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness and came and sat down under a juniper tree and he requested for himself that he might die, and said, "It is enough, now, O Lord, take my life for I am not better than my fathers." Isn’t it something that we, who are born again believers, find ourselves depressed? However, in this word of faith era, we would never admit being depressed. If I can be transparent for a moment, I have experienced depression since I’ve been saved. Whenever those emotions invade my mind I am reminded of Elijah. He, himself, had a bout with depression and won. Elijah had just won a great victory against the enemies of God and he destroyed all the false prophets in the land. It was in that moment of victory that Elijah received a message from Jezebel that she was going to have him killed. Elijah ran dejected and fearful. I can imagine Elijah thought his proving that the God of Israel is stronger than any false god would change the heart of Ahab and Jezebel. However, that was not the case. Fear gripped the heart of this man of God and he ran. Usually depression comes because of fear. We fear the unknown, we fear the potential of pain or disappointment and we allow that fear to linger in our minds until we succumb to depression. To be depressed is to be convinced that nothing will change or that there is no answer. Fear is the enemy of faith and we are going to have to rely on our faith to overcome fear and depression. Now as believers we don’t "conjure up" faith, we simply draw from the faith we already have. Jude 20 says, "but you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost." Elijah prayed in a depressed state but it was in his reaching out to God in desperate worship that the Lord sent the Angel of the Lord to feed him that he may get strength and journey to the place of God. You see, what Elijah didn’t know is, the enemy tempted him with fear to distract him from the blessing that was to come. Elijah was on the brink of a breakthrough and didn’t know it. He sought to die and God sought to elevate him. His depression came just before his destiny. Next time you find yourself under emotional attack: diagnose your fear, bring it to God in prayer, and look for your breakthrough with expectancy because your are on the brink of breakthrough and the devil can’t stand it!
